What is progressive music?

Progressive rock music, or sometimes just called Prog or Prog rock, is not really easy to define. In fact, many prog fans believe that one of the main essences of prog is, that it is not really straightforward to define what type of music it is. Many prog bands let their music evolve over the years, which means that it has progressed to a new sound, style and subject matter.

Most prog music is somewhat or even a lot more intricate and complex than pop music or standard rock music, both lyrically and musically. The subject matter is often not quite 'light-weight'. On a concept album the entire album expresses one or more subject themes or even a story.

Musically, prog music can vary from ambient to rock and metal, even by the same artist or on the same album! Some artists use recurring musical themes within an album or across albums.
